A couple of weeks ago - gosh, over a month actually - I was driving down from Skye late in the evening with $small_son in the car blasting Music Has The Right To Children as we wound our way from Shiel Bridge up to Cluanie, back down to Bunloyne, and then up to the top and back down into Invergarry and past Loch Oich and Loch Lochy, all the way to Spean Bridge as the early evening magic hour sunlight faded to dark.
Then we stopped at the Spar and got pizzas, and a coffee for me and a hot chocolate for him. "Dad, can we listen to something else now, like Rage Against the Machine?"
He's six but he's being raised to appreciate the classics. We bargained and converged on Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time for the second half.
Yes, we did see the Shiel Bridge goats, but they were back nearer Kintail this time.
Sure the specs are better on other devices, but it comes down to what you'll actually use. Being so tiny I can just toss it in my pocket, and read a few pages with no effort. It's like having a fancy notebook: you end up being very intentional when you write in it, but you'll happily jot something on a scrap of paper without second thought.
Yeah, my old kobo clara hd fits in my pocket, but it's not perfect, feels like it would get damaged.
I had been looking at the clara bw when I thought my hd was broken but managed to repair it.
Do you have the X4 or X3? I imagine with the small size it's barely a few sentences per page? Feels like it would be difficult to read comfortably. Maybe it's like reading one of those tiny bibles.
I have a x4 (the old one with usb-c charging) and reading feels pretty comfortable to me, even with poor eyesight.
I also tried using it to read a comic book at one point, but that was unreadable due to small letters/low resolution.
I got a cheap x4 from aliexpress and it's been great. Thought it'd be weird to read a book on it but it really hasn't been. Sticks to my phone and slips into a pocket really easily.
My preferred Kindle 4 classic also fits in my pockets, used ones are at around 25 EUR and pretty hackable. I could barely imagine reading a book in 3.7", that's half of a smartphone.
Where I live, an sms app is not very important. It's almost exclusively used for two factor authentication messages. Everyone uses WhatsApp, signal, telegram etc, even businesses and services.
So having a bare bones aosp messaging app was never an issue for me. Having said that, I find fossify messages pretty good.
I'm reading the clockwork rocket at the moment. It's a little different but it's set in a universe where the laws of physics / behaviour of light seems to be different to our own.
I considered buying an X4 for the portability (and to be honest installing and tinkering with crosspoint sounds fun).
But the kobo can fit in my jeans pocket and is about the size of a normal paperback page. I feel like the X4 would be too small and might be frustrating.
Though the memory of owning one and knowing about different brands of baby carriers feels like it belongs to another lifetime now.
